GUANGZHOU, Nov 16 (Bernama) -- The sepak takraw competition in the Asian Games Tuesday started amidst controversy when the Guangzhou Asian Games Organizing Committee (GAGOG) decided to field all match officials from the host nation during the match between Malaysia and China.
The move by GAGOC forced the Malaysian team to stage a protest which lasted for about an hour.
Malaysian team officials were shocked when realising that all match officials for their match against China were from the host nation, something that does not normally happen in games like the Asian Games.
"We came to know that the match officials were not from the International Sepak Takraw Federation (Istaf), but instead chosen by GAGOC who had intervened in the process," Malaysian team manager Datuk Awangsham Amit told reporters here today.
Malaysia however, won the match 2-1.
The first Malaysian regu comprising Noor Azman Abdul Hamid, Farhan Adam and Norshahruddin Mad Ghani earned the first point by beating Ding Yuting, Jin Jie and Li Huanhuan 21-11, 21-5.
But the second regu suffered a shocking defeat which allowed China to draw level when Mohd Futura Abd Ghani, Mohamad Syazwan Husin and Ariff Ramli lost 21-23, 21-17, 14-16 to Ge Yuleng, Wang Jian and Yang Jiapeng.
Fortunately, third regu members, Muhammad Zulkarnain Mohamaed Arif, Ahmad Sufi Mohamed Hashim and Muhd Azman Nasruddin saved the blushes with a 21-19, 21-18 win over Wang Gang, Xu Xu Minghi and Zhang Linge.
A fuming Awangsham said the regu should by no means lose to the Chinese.
"If they lost against Thailand, I can accept but not against the Chinese," he said.
Malaysia play Japan tomorrow.
