Women's Squash Team Seals Domination With Malaysia's Ninth Gold

GUANGZHOU, Nov 25 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian women's squash team dominated the squash event at the 16th Asian Games after defeating Hong Kong in the team's final on Thursday.

The team, led by the world number one Datuk Nicol Ann David, Low Wee Wern, Delia Arnold and Sharon Wee, outclassed Hong Kong, 2-0.

The victory enabled the Malaysian contingent to achieve their target of nine gold medals at the Guangzhou Asian Games.

Malaysia's number two, Wee Wern, starts the ball rolling after defeating an experienced Rebecca Chiu, 11-4, 7-11, 11-6 and 11-9 in a 54-minute encounter.

"I know it's going to be tough as we both had nothing to lose. She is an experienced player and played some good shots and I just knew that I had to hang in there.

"Our ranking is about the same and I've not played against her in the past two years and I knew its going to be tough," said the current world number 16th.

At the 2007 NSC Tour and the qualifying round of the 2008 Kuala Lumpur Open, Wee Wern lost to Rebecca -- 0-3 in both competitions.

Women's individual gold medallist Nicol clinched the winning point with 11-8, 11-7 and 11-6 win over Annie Au.

Nicol said the victory against Hong Kong brought back past memories of their encounters.

She added that Wee Wern had done an excellence job to win the first point for Malaysia.

"I am pleased that the team did their best and produced the results. I am so glad that the Malaysian contingent is happy with what we have done so far," said the five-time world champion.

India and South Korea won the bronze as the losing semi-finalists.
