MELAKA, Nov 21 (Bernama) -- More government-linked and private companies should adopt Malaysian sports champions to be their icons, said Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek.
He said having a sports icon would be an added selling point for the company concerned.
He told this to reporters after visiting national wushu exponent Chai Fong Ying, 24, who contributed Malaysia's first gold at the ongoing Guangzhou Asian Games, at her home in Taman Tamby Chik, Batu Berendam here Sunday.
Ahmad Shabery said if more GLCs and private companies came forward to adopt high performing athletes, it would further help sports development in the country.
"The government already has a reward scheme for such athletes whereby incentives of RM80,000 for a gold medal, RM40,000 for silver and RM20,000 for bronze and others are given if they are won at international meets like the Asian Games," he said.
He added that the government was also always looking at ways and means of helping athletes so as to ensure their welfare is taken care of.
On Malaysia's target at the Guongzhou Games, Ahmad Shabery said he was optimistic that the national contingent would achieve the nine-gold target set for it.
Malaysia have won five gold as of 7pm today, Day 10 of the Games.
