MALAYSIA achieved a milestone in rugby sevens by finishing fifth for the first time in the Asian Games at the University Town Main Stadium yesterday. The team, captained by Nik Safuan Nik Man, turned in a near perfect performance to beat Sri Lanka 27-7 in the fifth-sixth placing match.
Forward K. Dinesvaran was the toast of the team, scoring three tries while Mohd Noor Hafis added another two. Nazreen Nasrudin scored the only conversion.
Earlier, Malaysia failed to match South Korea, going down 47-7, in the quarter-finals. In the fifth-and eight placing match, they thrashed India 38-5 before edging Sri Lanka for fifth place.
"I am proud of my team's performance. We have achieved our target of finishing fifth and this is progress for Malaysian rugby. We must build from this competition for future challenges," said national coach Boon Hoon Hee
