Asian Games: Qabil targets elusive gold

THE evergreen Qabil Ambak Mahamad Fathil will have to be at his best in order to guide Malaysia to a historic gold in the Asian Games team dressage. Qabil, a multiple Sea Games gold medallist and the 2001 Sportsman of the Year, led Malaysia to a silver medal finish in the team dressage four years ago but gold will be the objective for the 30-year-old rider in Guangzhou.

Malaysia will be banking on the same team of Qabil, Syed Mohsin Al Mohdzar, Syed Omar Syed Abu Bakar Al Mohdzar, Putri Alia Soraya Ahmad Shuhami and Lee Cheng Nii who won silver four years ago to end the wait.

Qabil will also be aiming to do better in the individual dressage where he secured a bronze four years ago and a surprise gold will mean he will fulfil his childhood dream of qualifying for the 2012 London Olympics.
Equestrian Association of Malaysia (EAM) secretary Lau Choo Seng said Malaysia have a good chance of winning a medal in the team dressage but are aiming to turn it into gold this time.

"We have a good chance of winning a medal in the team dressage but we hope that we can earn the gold," said Choo Seng.

"We have the the same squad and they have been training hard overseas. We are looking forward to a good showing.

"Japan and South Korea are among the challengers while China are still new when it comes to equestrian."

Qabil and his teammates have been training in Belgium and Netherlands prior to the Games while Cheng Nii was based at the United States.

Syed Mohsin and Syed Omar Abu Bakar will also compete in the show-jumping individual and team events where a medal can be expected.

Qabil was supposed to compete in the show-jumping events but had to withdraw following a leg injury to his horse Parvina.

He will be using another horse from Netherlands for the individual and team dressage where Malaysia will still be going for gold despite the setback suffered by Parvina
