NAA decide to drop women’s recurve archery trio

KUALA LUMPUR: The women’s recurve archery trio of S. Anbarasi, Ng Sui Kim and Shahira Abdul Halim will not be on the plane to Guangzhou for the Asian Games.
Yesterday, the National Sports Council and Olympic Council of Malaysia finalised their list of 339 athletes and the contingent will shoulder the challenge to win nine gold medals for Malaysia’s best-ever achievement in the Games history.

The (NSC) director general Datuk Zolkples Embong, who is also the chef-de-mission of the contingent, said that the National Archery Association of Malaysia opted to drop the trio.

“They decided to send only the men’s team (Cheng Chu Sian, Mohd Izzuddin Abdul Rahim and Arif Farhan Ibrahim Putra), who won the silver medal in the recent Delhi Commonwealth Games. The Asian Games level of competition is much higher and the women’s team don’t stand a chance.”

Zolkples added that a final decision would also be made on the participation of weightlifters Amirul Hamizan Ibrahim and Aricco Jumitih and hurdler Noraseela Khalid.

“Commonwealth Games gold medallists Amirul and Aricco are nursing injuries and we will decide before Nov 2 after getting the medical reports on their conditions,” he said.

“Noraseela is in the contingent as a Category B athlete but we have to see how she fares in the Malaysian Open this weekend.”
Zolkples is hoping that the good results from the Commonwealth Games in which Malaysia won 12 gold medals would extend to the Guangzhou Asiad.

He said that multiple gold medals were expected from squash, cycling and bowling while several other sports could deliver at least one gold as they look to better the best-ever haul of 8-17-17 from Doha four years ago.
Four gold medals will be on offer in squash and Malaysia, spearheaded by Asian champions Nicol David and Azlan Iskandar, will be seeking a clean sweep.

“Bowling provided three golds for us in Doha and we expect them to maintain their consistency. We also have gold medal prospects in sailing, badminton, karate, wushu and equestrian,” said Zolkples.
All the athletes except those training overseas will check into a four-day motivational camp in Bangi on Monday.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak will be presiding over a flag-handing ceremony to the contingent on Nov 3 at Parliament House and he will also hand out rewards to the Commonwealth Games medal winners.
