Success In Asia Sailing Championship Augers Well For Asian Games - MYA

LANGKAWI, March 30 (Bernama) -- The recent success of Malaysian sailors at the Asia Sailing Championships in Shanwei, Guangdong, China last week, augers well for the country's medal aspirations in the Guangzhou Asian Games come November.

Malaysian Yachting Association (MYA) general manager Mohd Afendy Abdullah said young Malaysian sailors had won a gold and three silver medals at the championship.

National back up sailors Khairunnisa Mohd Afendy and Norashikin Mohd Sayed had clinched the gold medal from the women's International 420 Class while the three silvers came from Mohd Romzi Mohamad (Laser Radial), Mohamad Farhan (Optimist) and Ku Anas Ku Zamil-Mohd Hafizuddin Mazelan from the men's International 420 Class, he said.

"The achievement was the best performance by Malaysian sailors since winning a gold, two silver and two bronze medals at the same championships held in Pakistan (1999)," he said here on Tuesday.

Mohd Afendy said more than 30 sailors, both elite and back up national sailors, were currently undergoing training in Langkawi as preparations for the Asian Games.

At the 2006 Doha Asian Games in Qatar, Malaysia won a gold medal through Rufina Tan from the Optimist event.
