Esther sets sight on the Asian Games

ESTHER Cheah will defer her final semester while back-up bowler Sin Li Jane will be promoted to the elite squad next year.

Esther, a two-time world champion, is studying psychology at the University of Lincoln-Nebraska.

The 22-year-old has agreed to defer her final-year semester between August-November to compete in the Guangzhou Asian Games (Nov 12-20). She starred in the 2006 Doha Asian Games clinching two gold medals.

National coach Holloway Cheah said Esther will join the Asian Games training squad when her semester break starts in May.

"I have spoken to Esther about skipping a semester and she has agreed to it. She is making this sacrifice because she wants to be 100 per cent ready for the Asian Games," said Holloway on Sunday. Esther will compete in the Milo All-Stars Championship on her return to Kuala Lumpur on Dec 15.

As for Li Jane, Holloway said she will be recommended to the Malaysian Tenpin Bowling Congress (MTBC) coaching committee for promotion to next year's elite squad.

Li Jane's outstanding performance this year was taking silver in last month's Asian Indoor Games in Hanoi.

The 17-year-old was also part of the training squad for the Women's World Championship early this year. -- AJITPAL SINGH
