Zolkples worried over complacency

TOO much of a good thing can sometimes lead to complacency. Guangzhou has been generous in providing "only" the best accommodation and other facilities for athletes but this has left chef-de-mission Datuk Zolkples Embong a worried man.

He fears his athletes would lose focus because of the good treatment given by the Games organisers.

"My athletes may become complacent because of the fantastic facilities here. They should instead make full use of them to up their performance and stay focused," said Zolkples after the flag raising ceremony at the Games Village in Guangzhou yesterday.
"This warning especially goes to those who competed in the New Delhi Commonwealth Games. I don't want them to get a culture shock by comparing hosts."

Zolkples rates the facilities in Guangzhou as even better than those at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

"I believe Guangzhou is better. The facilities here are great," he said.

Yesterday's flag raising ceremony was also attended by the national badminton and cycling squads.

Zolkples reiterated that athletes must be geared to withstand all challenges in order to achieve the nine- gold medal target.

"It is too early to predict our chances as competition has not started. But I am confident we will make an impact especially in bowling, squash and cycling," he added.

The Malaysian contingent, comprising 333 athletes from 28 sports, start their campaign tomorrow.
