GUANGZHOU, Nov 26 (Bernama) -- Malaysia achieved its target of nine gold medals at the Guangzhou Asian Games in China, when the women's squash team defeated Hong Kong 2-0 in the final Thursday.
The women's team, led by world number one Datuk Nicol Ann David, Low Wee Wern, Delia Arnold and Sharon Wee, outclassed Hong Kong 2-0 to win the eagerly awaited gold.
It could have been a perfect 10 if not for the unexpected loss by the men's squash team at the hands of Pakistan while the men's hockey team also missed an opportunity to display a golden performance after losing 0-2 to Pakistan.
Apart from losing the gold, the hockey boys also lost an opportunity to earn an automatic spot to the 2012 London Olympics but consolation was an announcement by the Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek that hockey would become part of the 'Road to 2012 London Olympics' programme.
At the moment there are 21 athletes under the programme, namely from track cycling (5), badminton (8), archery (4), diving (4) and hockey is set to become the first team to make its way into the programme.
With a gold, three silver and two bronze medals won today, Malaysia's current tally rose to 9 gold, 17 silver, 13 bronze to end the day in ninth spot in the overall medal tally.
Meanwhile, Malaysia's poor performance in track and field continued when controversial hurdler Noraseela Khalid who has been training in Germany and South Africa for almost a decade now, managed only a fifth place with a poor time of 57.22s.
The National Sports Council had insisted on sending Noraseela although the Malaysian Amateur Athletic Union (MAAU) had reservations about sending her when she failed to meet the qualifying mark.
Host China continued to stamp its supremacy in the Games with 180 gold, 103 silver, 91 bronze, while South Korea with 72 gold, 60 silver, 85 bronze remained in second place and Japan maintained third spot with a tally of 39-68-86).
Meanwhile, despite having achieved the target of nine gold medals, Malaysian athletes would be eager to add another gold or two when a number of athletes enter the fray Friday, the penultimate day of the Games, in search of the elusive 10th gold medal.
Gymnasts Elaine Koon and Nur Hidayah Abdul Wahid will see action in rhythmic gymnastics, Mohd Hatta Mahamut and G. Yamini in karate, Yee Yi Leng, Nurul Sarah Abd Kadir, Norjannah Hafiszah Jamaludin, Siti Zubaidah Adabi (women's 4x100m) in athletics and divers Ng Yen Yee, Leong Mun Yee (women's 3m Springboard), Bryan Nickson Lomas and Ooi Tze Liang (men's 10m platform) will all be hoping for a golden performance.
