GUANGZHOU, Nov 18 (Bernama) -- A late equaliser by South Korea cost Malaysia their second win when the two teams were tied 2-2 in the preliminary Group A match of Men's hockey in the 16th Asian Games at Tianhe Sports Centre here Thursday.
After confidently leading 2-1, Malaysia were caught off guard, allowing Seo Jongho a solo run to beat goalie S. Kumar five minutes before the final whistle.
The defending champions from the Doha edition four years ago opened accounts through Yoon Sunghoon in the 14th minute before Azlan Misron equalised 10 minutes later.
Hafifihafiz Hanafi gave Malaysia the lead in the 48th minute when his field goal, a pass from Azlan, found the net.
As Malaysia slowed their tempo, a fast attack from South Korea enabled Seo Jongho to equalise..
In their last meeting, the two teams drew 1-1 in the Azlan Shah Cup in Ipoh last May.
Hosts China are leading Group A, followed by South Korea and Malaysia.
The other contenders are Oman and Singapore, whom Malaysia beat 3-0.
Malaysian coach Stephen Van Huizen said he is quite disappointed with the late goal because his charges had the opportunity to win.
"It's a draw and we're still not in the semifinals. I need to watch the match between South Korea and China tomorrow, and we'll see our chance with the host on Sunday," he said.
MALAYSIA: S. Kumar, Baljit Charun Singh, Hafifihafiz Hanafi, Muhamd Amin Rahim, Mohd Madzli Ikmar, Tengku Ahmad Tajuddin Tengku Abdul Jalil, Nabil Fiqri Mohd Noor, Muhamad Shukri Abdul Mutalib, Muhamad Razie Abd Rahim, Azlan Misrom, Mohd Shahrun Abdullah.
SOUTH KOREA: Lee Hyungho, Lee Seungil, Lee Nam Yong, Seo Jungho, Yoon Sunghoon, You Hyosik, Yeo Woon Kon, Hyun Hyesung, Kang Moonkyu, Hong Eunseong, Jang Jonghyun.
