GUANGZHOU, Nov 20 (Bernama) -- Spikers Beh Shun Ting and Luk Teck Hua pulled off a pleasant upset by beating a formidable Kazakhstan pair and advance to the quarter-finals of the Asian Games beach volleyball competition here today.
Shun Ting-Teck Hua disposed Kazakhstan's top pair, Irina Tsimbalova-Tatyna Mashkov, runners-up in the Asian Championships in Haiku, China (July), 21-19, 21-15 to earn their slot.
"They were in splendid form, physically and mentally. They were calm under pressure and that was among the deciding factors today. This is their best performance in the Asian Games," said coach Lim Poh Hong.
Shun Ting-Teck Hua who had finished 9th in the Haiku championship, will now meet Japan's Satoko Urata-Takemi Nashibori, seeded number three in the Games.
Satoko-Takemi had earlier overcome Alianca and Mariana from Timor Leste, 21-1, 21-3.
Lim added that tomorrow's quarter-final match against the Japanese duo would be a close affair as the standard of both pairs was almost similar.
"They (Satoko, Takemi) are not as strong in attack and blocking as Irina and Tatyana. But the Japanese girls are good in defence and receiving," he said.
