WE are almost there!
It is no longer a question of "if" we are going to reach our Asian Games nine-gold target but "when".
Following Ku Jin Keat's surprise but well-deserved gold in the men's kata, and R. Puvaneswarn winning the men's kumite below 55kg gold medal, the naysayers are going to be silenced today.
With two squash finals and a hockey final to come today, the national contingent in Guangzhou are well placed to not only match the target but may well surpass it.
It has been slow in coming, but we always knew we needed patience as the gold medals trickled in.
Unlike the gold rush often seen at the Sea Games or even the Commonwealth Games, the Asian Games is spread out over 16 days and the medals do not arrive in bulk.
But today could well be a bumper day for Malaysia if the squash players do what is expected of them in the team finals and the hockey lads create another piece of history by beating Pakistan in the final and seal a spot in the 2012 London Olympics.
"It will be the icing on the cake," said chef-de-mission Datuk Zolkples Embong after Jin Keat's victory, in reference to a historic hockey gold.
In fact, the hockey team would be the first to win gold for Malaysia in a team sport at the Asian Games.
So my advice to all Malaysian sports fans would be to clear your calendar today, call in sick if you must, sit back and watch the golden bonanza from Guangzhou.
