Asian Games: Malaysia Just A Step Away From Reaching 9-Gold Target

GUANGZHOU, Nov 24 (Bernama) -- Malaysia are just one step away from reaching the 9-gold medal target for the Asian Games after karate exponents contributed two gold medals on the opening day of karate competitions here Wednesday.

The two gold medals won today through Ku Jin Keat (men's Kata) and R. Puvaneswaran from the men's Under-55kg Kumite lifted Malaysia's gold medal tally to eight, just one short of the 9-gold target for the Games.

The 8 gold, 14 silver, 11 bronze medals won thus far also saw Malaysia move up two spots in the overall medal tally - from 10th place yesterday to eighth -today.

Apart from the two gold medals, Malaysia also won a silver from the men's sepaktakraw (inter-regu) and three bronze medals, one from women's Kata and two from diving.

Host China continued their dominance by adding another seven gold medals to open up huge gap over the chasing pack with 172 gold, 92 silver, 86 bronze, a good 101 gold medals more than second placed South Korea, who have 71 gold, 59 silver, 81 bronze while Japan remain third with a 36-66-74 tally. Jin Keat's was Malaysia's seventh gold medal of the Games after wushu, cycling, bowling (2) and squash (2) had contributed their share.

Another karate exponent, R. Puvaneswaran, also a seasoned campaigner, later came on court to give Malaysia the eighth gold medal by winning the men's Under-55kg Kumite after beating Emad Mohammed Al Maliki from Saudi Arabia.

Sepaktakraw who had earlier contributed a silver from the team event, added another after losing 0-2 to Thailand in the Inter-regu final.

The three bronze medals won today came from divers Cheong Jun Hoong (women's 1m Springboard) and Yeoh Ken Nee from the men's 1m Springboard while the third one was contributed by Karate exponent Lim Lee Lee from women's Kata.

Tomorrow, Malaysian athletes will continue their gold medal hunt in a number of sports, namely men's hockey, men's and women's squash and karate.

Malaysia take on Pakistan in the men's hockey final while the men's squash team also face Pakistan while the women face Hong Kong in their final match.
