Asian Games: Hup Wei's Medal Hopes Fizzle Out

GUANGZHOU, Nov 23 (Bernama) -- Malaysian high jump ace Lee Hup Wei's hopes of winning a medal in the Guangzhou Asian Games fizzled out when he failed to reach anywhere near his personal best in the high jump final at the Aoti Main Stadium here Tuesday.

Hup Wei, the National record holder with a height of 2.27m, could only manage 2.15m to finish in ninth place.

The Dengkil-born athlete had cleared 2.15m but decided to omit 2.19m and attempted to clear 2.23m instead but failed.

"Nothing went right today. My runs, approach and jumps were not composed. I could not focus well," he told reporters here today.

Qatar's Mutaz Essa Barshim took the gold with 2.27m, incidentally the height Hup Wei had cleared before, while Hiromi Takahari from Japan took the silver with 2.23m while Rashidah Al Mannai (Qatar), Huang Haiqiang (CHN) and Vitaliy Tsykunov (Kazakhstan) shared the bronze in an unprecedented finish.

In the Doha Asian Games four years ago, Hup Wei had also managed 2.15m and finished in eighth place while in the New Delhi Commonwealth Games last month, he had cleared 2.23m.
