ASIAN GAMES: Holloway is familiar with the lanes at Anyang
NATIONAL coach Holloway Cheah will not be on unfamiliar ground” at the Incheon Asian Games bowling venue — the Anyang Hogye Gymnasium Centre. The coach has a good idea of the venue after talking to his keglers, who played at the Anyang Hogye Gymnasium Centre in last year’s Asian Indoor Games & Martial Arts.
However, the lane oiling patterns will only be released a month before the competition.
Holloway said the venue is small, and it is going to be difficult for the bowlers to concentrate on their game.
“It is as small as the one in Guangzhou four years ago. The centre, however, is equipped and the lanes are great. I will have to prepare my bowlers to adapt with different conditions," said Holloway.
Elite bowler Timmy Tan’s first experience in a team competition was at the Asian Indoor Games. Malaysia won the team event silver.
“I played at Anyang Hogye and it was a great feeling. The lanes are good but we will only know when the oiling patterns are released," said Timmy.
Holloway hopes for a memorable outing in his fourth straight Asian Games as a coach since the Busan edition 12 years ago.
“None of us have seen South Korea's Asian Games squad competing outside their country. I heard they have been preparing for the last two years.
“We and the other teams must break Korea’ momentum in the first event. If we don't and they win the opening men and women's singles, it will be very tough for others.”
Meanwhile, Rafiq Ismail led the men’s local pool in the masters' qualifiers at the Malaysian Open yesterday with a six-game total of 1,463 followed by Adrian Ang (1,450), Muhd Nur Aiman Khairuddin (1,449) and Syafiq Ridhwan Abdul Malek (1,422)
In the women’s pool, back-up bowlers Victoria Chin and Hee Kar Yen are joint leaders with an identical 1,399 followed by former world champion Shalin Zulkifli (1,374). The men's and women's qualifying rounds end today.
Victoria Chin is the joint leader in the women’s pool with Hee Kar Ye.
