Elaine Dominates Sports Incentive Scheme

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 3 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's rhythmic gymnastic star, Elaine Koon, was today handsomely rewarded under the National Sports Councils' Sports Excellence Reward Scheme following her remarkable performance at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi last month.

At the Delhi Games, held from Oct 3 to 14, she bagged one gold, one silver and three bronze medals.

For the fine performance, Elaine received a total reward of RM180,000, RM80,000 for the gold medal in the hoop event, RM40,000 for the silver medal in ball event and RM20,000 each for the bronze medal in the rope, ribbon and individual all-around events.

"I did not expect to win and I just tried my best there (the Commonwealth Games). I want to save the money for my future years," said the 17-year-old gymnast.

Elaine, a Bukit Jalil Sports School student, however, did not want to put any pressure on herself in her Asian Games debut at the Guangzhou Games in China later this month. "It will be my first Asian Games. It will be a lot harder for me because at the Asian Games, there will be more higher level gymnasts competing. My target is to enter the finals in individual overall event," she said.

At the Asian Games, Elaine said, she would be facing tougher opponents from Kazakhztan, Uzbekistan, Japan and South Korea.

Meanwhile, trailing closely behind Elaine in the reward scheme were Pandalela Rinong Pamg (diving) and Bibiana Ng (shooting) who received RM100,000 each for winning gold in their respective disciplines.

All the winners received their rewards from Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek at a ceremony held at Parliament House here Wednesday.

Following the success of the Malaysian contingent in the Commonwealth Games, winning 12 gold medals, 10 silver and 14 bronze, the National Sports Council gave out a total cash incentives of RM1.71 million.

A total of 43 athletes from 10 sports categories who won medals at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, India were rewarded under the Shakam scheme.
