KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 11 (Bernama) -- The chess players who are going to the Asian Games as category A athletes want to repay the trust by returning with a medal from Guangzhou.
Malaysian Chess Federation (MCF) deputy president Ibrahim Abu Bakar said the Malaysian challenge is spearheaded by Mok Tze Meng, Alia Anin Azwa Bakri and Nur Nabila Azman Hisham.
"We have good chess players capable of beating international champions. I believe that they will do well despite not highly ranked as the Chinese and Indian players," he told reporters at KL International Airport (KLIA) in Sepang Thursday.
They left for Guangzhou Asian Games (Nov 12-27) together with the bowling, shooting, men's hockey, cricket, sepak takraw and snooker squads this morning.
Ibrahim said Malaysia could still pose stiff challenge in the individual events despite the absence of number one player Mas Hafizulhilmi Agus Abdul Rahman.
"Mas Hafizulhilmi had to withdraw due to dengue fever. He has been undergoing treatment at a Kota Bharu hospital since Friday," he added.
The chess competition starts tomorrow with Malaysia taking on host China, India, Vietnam and Philippines.
