Athletics: Mazlan: Shahidan must get serious

FORMER National Sports Council (NSC) director general Datuk Mazlan Ahmad has urged Malaysian AAU (MAAU) president Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim to get serious and focus on development of athletics as the failure in the Asian Games has underlined the horrendous state of the sport in the country. Mazlan said quality young athletes are hardly forthcoming to take over from the seniors and this shows that almost every programme at school and State levels are failing and, it is about time Shahidan and his administrators started taking some drastic measures to save athletics in the country.

Malaysia failed to win a single athletics medal in Guangzhou and Mazlan warned that if MAAU is not careful there will come a time when no athlete will be able qualify for the Asian Games and may even fail to win gold at Sea Games level.

"The main reason is no junior athletes are coming through the ranks to take over from the seniors. The failure in Guangzhou is a clear indication for Datuk Shahidan to start looking seriously at development and act fast before the situation gets out of hand," said Mazlan.
"Shahidan must stop listening to people who say that everything is okay (in athletics) as he has had enough proof in the last few years to know that the sport is suffering and he must initiate the changes.

"If nothing is done, there will come a time when Malaysia will not have any qualifiers in athletics for the Asian Games and even fail to win gold in the Sea Games.

"If that happens, I feel it will be too late to do anything.

"At the moment, we are unable to produce quality young athletes. "Shahidan must sit with his officers and start working out a plan to rescue the sport."

South East Asian rivals Thailand won a gold in the women's 4x100m while Vietnam and Indonesia did better and the current scenario will put Malaysia under tremendous pressure to perform in next year's Sea Games in Indonesia.

If MAAU refuses to look into development, Mazlan's fears will become reality sooner than later as several more senior athletes are expected to quit after next year's the Sea Games.
