THE national archers' Asian Games campaign ended like a damp squib when Cheng Chu Sian and Izzuddin Rahim failed to advance past the men's individual third round at the Aoti Archery Range yesterday. Both received first-round byes before Chu Sian and Izzuddin easily accounted for Nepal's Ashim Sherchan and Zaw Win Htike 4-0 in the second round.
But their joy was short-lived as former world record holder Oh Jin Hyek of South Korea eliminated Izzuddin 7-3 while India's Tarundeep Rai beat Chu Sian 6-2.
Chu Sian rated his performance as average after having little time to prepare for the Asian Games so soon after the Commonwealth Games ended.
"I shot 28 in all four sets. It's hard to say if that was good or not, it's about average. I felt tired and have not recovered completely with only three weeks to prepare," said Chu Sian. "I feel that my body is not listening to my mind after playing for so long."
Izzuddin briefly threatened an upset after winning the first set against Jin Hyek but tensed up as the match progressed.
"Pressure is the main reason. In the first set, I beat him because there was no tension. I tensed up in the third set as he got closer and got three 10s.
"I'm upset. I tried my best but he's a very good archer. I still have to improve and learn to control my anxiety," said Izzuddin, 20.
